  1. Little Baskets

    03/08/09 09:26:08 | 3 Comments

I wanted to be a lightkeeper
put it in a little basket
carry it to the edge of the sea
and shake it like a dinner bell
    in case the mermaids
    needed something to eat.

    Then I learned
    there were no mermaids
and light was just a function
    of the sun or something
    that comes in a bulb
    or some such.

    And later when I heard
that we only use a fraction of our brains
I tried very hard to open up
    and catch all that...
  2. well, would you?

    03/01/08 20:22:47 | 2 Comments

lie with me under the tree
where money grows but it doesn't matter nor the outstretched limbs of mendicants
wrestling each other down in the shadows and stroll together like love's big feet
neither in the lead nor following but there where the moon tugs
on the tide to cover its footprints where nothing of value can be held
put in a jar or labeled as free as mahogany
horsepaddling the Atlantic just floating now
between the calliope chords of the...
  3. I never saw the movie

    02/24/08 21:43:43 | 0 Comments

I never the saw the movie, just the poster
of her bending naked beauty, eating
Raisinets out of the palm of my hand.
One day she said: 'my parents are taking me to France.'
I said: "no, how could a body like this be whisked away
in its prime, so wet and sulky, so like summertime.
And just when you were about to show me
what happens when you take your glasses off.'
And now it's just these hoods and trunks.
    Doin' wheelies...
  4. Looking at you in the parking lot

    02/24/08 21:33:06 | 0 Comments

Across the daily traffic under a midday canopy.
Black and white steeds, camels from exotic locales.
Real live animals in a traveling carousel.
Can you see them moving up and down?
Oh, you do, you do. And that sign that reads:
    H. Vazquez, Proprietor. Don't look now.
No one's ever seen him. Today he shall
appear to sign autographs. Is that him
dabbing our initials on your forehead?
It's not often I can lean in and kiss both.
    Ah, but...
  5. my cat and me

    02/24/08 21:25:37 | 2 Comments

    Sometimes my cat
will whine like food isnt enough
so I'll open up the closet door
and she'll curl in the dark
til she falls asleep in the laundry basket.

Me I spend my day in between sleep
    watching people look at me
like I'm speaking a foreign language
and find myself staring at shadows
    forming around buildings
feeling the music of an architecture
that may or may not exist.

And when she's ready to come...
  6. once we dreamed of streetcleaners

    02/20/08 21:16:55 | 0 Comments

    Once we asked the question:
When will the leaves become birds?

Once we held our dead closely
As if there might be some word.

But the blood no longer dreams of poppies.
The rain is full of holes.

We're at one with the season
    That will not come.

  7. Plovers

    02/20/08 20:14:28 | 0 Comments

Who will be your plover now
that your house has fallen down
    who will take the weight
    from your ankles, offer
    the reflection of the waters
    for your mouth to taste,
    pose as your true form
    wading in the moonlight?

    You may hear the call
    once or twice surely
run naked as the inside of a shell
trying to catch the sea's grand
    opening finale, but really
    it's nothing so dramatic:
we come, we go, we imagine.

  8. Warming to the Globe

    01/22/08 21:16:48 | 1 Comments

A man walking his two dogs
    on a clickety reeling Sunday

Framed by the green of pines
Old gray columns down black asphalt

No need for a jacket in late January
    Smaller and smaller they recede

Like Chaplin and his overgrown feet
    Silently flapping home.
